Dictionary Skills

Each Dictionary Skills test consists of 40 objective and short answer questions to be completed in 20 minutes. Contestants use dictionaries during the competition, which may be tabbed. Contest questions cover word origins and histories, parts of speech, pronunciation, variant spellings, plurals, alphabetizing and other such elements. Test questions are also taken from charts, tables and lists contained in the dictionary.

 

UIL Dictionary Skills Vocabulary

  • definition – the meaning of a word
  • derivatives – words formed by adding beginnings or endings to base words
  • entry word – the word being looked up in the dictionary
  • etymology – provides a word’s history or origin
  • guide words – the words at the top of the dictionary page
  • part of speech – indicates how a word is used in a sentence
  • pronunciation key – provides information on how to say a word
  • subject labels – indicates how a word would be used for a specific topic or field   of study
  • syllabication – how a word is divided into syllables
